Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. She did not explore acting as a profession until she reached adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse consequences stress can cause. Perry was a shy teenager and was not a performer. Her first acting experience was in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends as she moved from Boston University. Following her graduation, Perry relocated to New York to search for television work landing small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led her back to California which is where she discovered theater work. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was performed at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she starred in a recurring role on her own ABC Political thriller Scandal starring her father. In the same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
